England boss Hodgson all but cements Rashford's place at Euro 2016 after debut goal

The Manchester United youngster emphatically stated his case to go to France with a sensational goal just 135 seconds into his England debut.

At 18 years and 208 days Rashford became England’s third youngest scorer after Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney when he struck with only his fourth touch of his first international at the Stadium of Light.

His close range strike made him England’s youngest-ever debut scorer - and impressed Hodgson who has to cut his squad by two and name his final 23 by Tuesday.

And he made it pretty clear Rashford - after just 18 appearances for United - has shown enough to deserve the chance.

He said: “Fantastic - he did very well and I’m pleased for him. He tired a bit in the second half second half but that’s pretty normal. What a debut. People asked me if he was ready for it and could deal with it and I think we got a resounding ‘yes’ to that.

''Will he be in my final squad? Well, let’s wait and see. I’ve got till Tuesday. I said he wouldn’t be out of place in anyone’s 23. But I don’t need to tell anyone now.

''We wouldn’t have selected him if he was not ready. He has enormous pace, is direct and is very good at making runs behind defenders.

''Technically, from what’ I’ve seen, he is a very good player. But he is young and he has a lot to learn but everyone starts form somewhere.”

Rashford’s early strike and a second half goal from half-time goal Wayne Rooney gave England a 2-1 win over Australia - Eric Dier’s late own goal giving the Aussies a late consolation.

Hodgson confirmed that Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson have both done enough to make his 23 while Daniel Sturridge, left out last night with a calf injury, insists he will be fit to resume training on Monday.

''We had slight fitness doubts about Henderson and Wilshere but they have both proved with their performances in the games and in training that they are ready right now - and they will be even more ready as we go on.

''We will see how Sturridge goes over weekend. I am hoping he trains on Monday. And if he does then the calf injury will not be the reason he left out.”

England midfielder Jordan Henderson is convinced Rashford should go. The Liverpool captain said: “He’s got no fear. He wants to ball all the time, running behind and to be fair it’s a great finish.

''He’s got everything. He’s good on the ball, he’s got good movement for a young lad but he just needs to continue to work as I’m sure he will do and he’ll be a very big player for England and Manchester United.

''He made an impact tonight on his debut so I don’t think he’ll fear anything. If he’s give the opportunity [at Euro 2016] I’m sure he’ll do very well but that’s up to the manager.”
