Stefan Mauk hadn't even considered a call-up to the Australian team. Now he could line-up against the biggest names in English football.

Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph is set to miss out on the European Championships after picking up a groin injury.

The 26-year-old was named in England's 26-man provisional squad for this summer's tournament in France. Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson will cut that squad to 23 for the tournament after Friday's friendly with Australia and said that Delph will now only be considered if there are injuries to other players.

Delph will will miss the game against Australia at Sunderland's Stadium of Light after staying behind in Manchester for treatment oh his muscle problem following last Sunday's game against Turkey when he was an unused substitute.

Hodgson told a news conference: "We don't have Fabian Delph with us -- he's strained a muscle in his groin area.

"I've spoken to him and he's stayed in Manchester, and I've made it clear to him that this means he probably won't be with us in the final 23 -- unless, of course, we have injuries.

Fabian Delph has endured a miserable season since moving to Man City from Aston Villa.

"I've actually put him on the standby list, which he understands and accepts. I don't think it's going to be a really long-term injury for him so, if I needed him and I wanted him to come with us, it would be easy for me to ask him to do so.

"With the situation we have with the other 25 players, it might be unlikely."

It rounds off a miserable season for Delph, who has been troubled by injuries since his controversial £8 million move from Aston Villa last summer.

He suffered a hamstring injury in a preseason friendly against Real Madrid and damaged it again in September -- just 90 seconds into a European Championship qualifier for England against Switzerland.

In February he missed a further two months with an Achilles tendon injury and has made just 27 appearances for City this season -- starting just 14.

He was already fighting for his place in Hodgson's 23-man squad for Euro 2016 having played just 98 minutes over three matches for England this season.
