Hummels makes Bayern return

World Cup-winning Germany defender Mats Hummels will leave Borussia Dortmund during the off-season to return to FC Bayern München.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed on Tuesday morning that a deal has been struck with their domestic rivals.

“Mats is one of the best central defenders in the world. With him, we can increase the quality of our team again,” Rummenigge told the club’s official website.

The 27-year-old centre-back progressed through the ranks at the Allianz Arena before making his professional breakthrough at Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp, achieving incredible success under the now-Liverpool manager.

Hummels has won two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal and also reached the final of the Champions League in 2013.

According to German publication Bild, Hummels has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.

“I have not made this decision easily after eight-and-a-half successful years at BVB,” Hummels told his club’s official website.

“I was always proud and still am, to wear the BVB jersey and to be part of this exceptional team. Before I return to my hometown in the summer, we have a large, common goal all: once again to bring the DFB-Pokal to Dortmund.

“For that I will give everything just like my team-mates. I wholeheartedly thank my team-mates, all the staff and fans for this long and wonderful time in Black and Yellow.”
