Eden Hazard’s anti-Spurs comments are farcical and borderline hypocritical

Eden Hazard has joined Chelsea teammate Cesc Fabregas in publicly admitting that he hopes to see Tottenham Hotspur's title bid fail.

The Belgian winger was quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "The fans, the club, the players; we don't want Tottenham to win the Premier League.

"We hope for Leicester because they deserve to be champions this season.

"We have a good game next week against Tottenham and if we can beat them it will be good."

Fabregas had earlier told Sky Sports: "I don't want Spurs to win it. For what they've done I'd love Leicester to win the Premier League."

Although it is understandable for some Chelsea players - especially one who used to captain Arsenal - to be anti-Spurs, it is farcical for Hazard to claim that Leicester deserve to be champions at this stage of the season.

It is not up to Chelsea to decide who deserves to be champions. That must be decided fairly, over 38 properly-contested games.

Yes, it looks increasingly likely that the Foxes will win the title, in which case their success will be much-deserved, but Fabregas and Hazard's comments threaten to undermine the integrity of this season's race to the finish line.

Chelsea play host to Spurs and Leicester in their final three games, and there is real fear among Tottenham fans that - if it the destination of the title is still undecided by the final day - Hazard, Fabregas and co will roll over for Claudio Ranieri's men, having given their all against their London rivals.

But let's forget that conspiracist's dream for a minute and view Hazard's recent comments for what they were - a desperate plea for acceptance.

Don't for a second kid yourself that Hazard cares about Chelsea. If he did, he wouldn't have let his performance level drop so dreadfully low this season - a season in which he was accused of feigning injury by the Belgian media.

Hazard's attempt to paint himself as a fully-fledged member of the Spurs-hating Chelsea mob is shameful and ridiculous.

The Telegraph reported in February that Hazard was keen on a move to Real Madrid, but it would be fairly safe to assume that he has played his way out of that dream deal - for now, at least.

My assumption is that Hazard - who was branded a "rat" by a fan's banner late last year according to the London Evening Standard - has realised that he's not going to get a better offer this summer, so he's trying to talk his way back into favour with the Blues supporters.
