Mats Hummels set to leave Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich - reports

Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels admitted last week that he has been suffering sleepless nights due to the ongoing uncertainty over his future.

The influential German defender, 27, faces the toughest decision of his career: does he sign another contract extension at Signal Iduna Park, or does he leave in search of a new challenge?

According to German newspaper Bild, it appears that Hummels has opted for the latter.

They claim - per 101 Great Goals and Goal - that Hummels is poised to complete a shock €30 million move to Dortmund's bitter domestic rivals Bayern Munich.

In news that will come as a hammer-blow to Dortmund and their supporters, the BVB captain is understood to be on the verge of signing a four-year deal with the Bavarian giants who, from next season onwards, will be managed by the experienced Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti.

HUMMELS' FATHER HINTED AT BAYERN MOVE LAST WEEK

Hummels is expected to follow in the footsteps of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski by swapping Dortmund for Bayern.

But the BVB faithful might not be completely surprised following comments made by the centre-back's father last week.

"Mats has to make an extremely important decision in his career," Hermann Hummels was quoted as telling Sport Bild by Goal. "Dortmund is back among the top clubs in Europe, so the decision isn't easy for him.

"But if he should leave Dortmund, then he will move to one of the five or six best clubs and FC Bayern is one of them."

DORTMUND FANS ARE GOING TO BE ANGRY

Hummels, due to his advancing years and lack of pace, might be reluctant to swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League - it's believed that several clubs in England's top division are interested in the defender.

So, a move to Bayern Munich makes sense for the player who started his career at the Allianz Arena. However, completing a transfer to the Allianz Arena will ruin his legacy in the eyes of the Dortmund fans - who will inevitably regard the move as a betrayal.

No wonder he's been having trouble sleeping recently.

"It's a very difficult decision, and when I finally make it people will understand how hard it is for me," Hummels told Sky Germany, per Sky Sports. "I've set a date, but I'm keeping it to myself.

"It's been taking me at least half an hour extra to fall asleep for several weeks now because this is such a big issue for me."
