VARDY'S HAVING A BARDY: Shakespeare could have predicted Jamie Vardy's meteoric ascent

The bonkers claim came as celebrations got under way for the 400th anniversary of The Bard’s death.

An eagle-eyed fan reckons the famous opening lines of Richard III – a play dedicated to Leicester’s most famous figure – forsee the Foxes’ charge to Premier League glory.

The lines declare: “Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by this son of York.”

Leicester’s top scorer this season is Yorkshireman Jamie Vardy.

The striker, suspended for today’s game against Swansea City, has already bagged 22 goals.

But back in Christmas 2014, the winter’s tale was one of relegation misery and discontent for Foxes fans, with the Prem side bottom of the table.

Fast forward to this summer and Leicester are five points clear and look set to be crowned Premier League kings.

One fan said: “The title is not in the bag yet.

“But the fact that William Shakespeare seems to have predicted this all along is great.”

King Richard III had his title dreams shattered at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.

HERO: Leicester’s Italian manager Claudio Ranieri has turned the club's fortunes around

His fortunes mirror the Foxes’ own dramatic turnaround.

The monarch had been fading into history when his body was discovered beneath a Leicester city centre car park in 2012.

He had a formal burial in Leicester Cathedral in March 2015 just days before City started on their incredible run of form.

This weekend marks the 400th anniversary of The Bard’s death, with commemorations taking place across the country.

But for football fans it’s the Foxes who are also in the limelight – they will go eight points clear with a win over Swansea this afternoon.

The gentleman of Roma pulling the strings has been Leicester’s Italian manager Claudio Ranieri.

But assistant boss Craig Shakespeare has been helping to write every line of the script.

However there’s a note of caution for Leicester fans – Shakespeare loved a tragic ending.

So we are all left asking the same question – to be champions or not to be?
