Lyonnais 4 - 1 Caen: Lyon cruise to victory against Caen

Lyon stepped up their hunt for a Champions League place with a confident 4-1 win against inconsistent Caen.

Three first-half goals from Samuel Umtiti, Alexandre Lacazette and Maxwel Cornet were enough to inflict a third successive defeat on the visitors, while moving Les Gones level on points with a host of third-placed clubs.

Patrice Garande's side made the perfect start when, with less than 10 minutes played, Corentin Tolisso's knock-down from Mathieu Valbuena's free-kick was turned in by Umtiti.

And the hosts did not have to wait long for a second of the game when Jordan Ferri slid in Lacazette and the France international did the rest with a confident right-footed finish from just inside the area.

Caen offered a response and Andy Delort flashed a header agonisingly wide but it was Lyon who grabbed the crucial third goal of the game as the half-time whistle loomed.

Tolisso was the creator again and, this time, his clever through ball from midfield released Cornet to burst into the area before firing beyond Remy Vercoutre with a clinical finish.

Caen offered their fans hope on the hour mark when Delort got his goal, tapping in at the back post from Ronny Rodelin's superb delivery, but Lyon's three-goal advantage was restored with seven minutes to play.

Substitute Rachid Ghezzal claimed the assist as he cut in from the right to pick out Tolisso and Lyon's midfield man did the rest with the aid of a deflection to cap off a successful afternoon.
