Pellegrini is set to welcome back Kompany for the visit of title rivals Tottenham but insists there are no guarantees he won't break down again.

Pellegrini insists having Kompany back is a massive boost - but admits he has no idea if his talisman will stay fit.

He said: "It's always important to have our best players 100-per-cent fit to play.

"But he's been working for three weeks now without any problems and I think he's ready to come back.

"But it's impossible to know. It's very difficult to find a particular thing about a muscle injury.

"There's a lot of things you can do to try to have less injuries - but no one will be sure you are not going to have any more."

The Belgium ace has suffered a nightmare season that has seen him break down with two serious calf problems.

He returned to action on Boxing Day but lasted less than 10 minutes before limping off and being sidelined for another seven weeks.

Club bosses have left no stone unturned in their bid to get to the bottom of the problem after sending Kompany to see specialists in America and Europe.

The defender has spent the last three weeks in full training and is poised to make a timely comeback against Spurs as Pellegrini's men look to bounce back from last weekend's shock defeat to leaders Leicester to keep their title hopes alive.

With Kompany, City have won seven from nine games conceding just two goals, but without him have played 16 games, won just seven, drawn three and lost six while letting in 24 goals in the process.

Pellegrini, meanwhile, has revealed Fabian Delph has been sidelined for up to seven weeks with an Achilles problem and faces a desperate battle to be fit for Euro 2016.

Delph broke down with the injury during against the Foxes and will now miss England's friendly internationals with Germany and Holland next month.

Delph is not expected to return to action until the end of April, just several weeks before Roy Hodgson's mean leave for France and the Euros.

His absence is also a blow to City's hopes of winning silverware this season as they chase an historic quadruple.

Pellegrini, who will also be without six other injured stars added: "He has a problem with his Achilles' tendon. It will be six to seven weeks for his recovery."
