The future of Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has been called into question on several occasions this season, but rumours of Mourinho taking over from the Dutchman at the end of the current campaign have continued to gather pace.
Several press outlets in England have even gone so far as to draw up lists of Mourinho's potential summer acquisitions.
One such potential summer signing is none other than Varane, who was originally brought to the Santiago Bernabeu by Mourinho in 2011.
While Zidane is not surprised by the rumours linking Mourinho with a move for Varane, he insists the France international is a crucial part of his squad.
"Mourinho wanting Varane would be no surprise," Zidane told reporters when asked about the rumours. "He's the one who brought him to Real Madrid.
"What I can say is that he's a Real Madrid player and I want him to stay here because he's the future of the team."
Varane has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Real this season, bagging one goal in the process.
