Mainz moved level on points with fourth-placed Schalke on Friday night thanks to a 2-1 win over the Royal Blues at the Coface Arena.
Gaetan Bussmann gave Mainz a 33rd-minute lead with his first goal in the Bundesliga, drilled in from just outside the penalty area after Schalke failed to clear their lines from a corner.
Younes Belhanda followed him by putting his name on the scoresheet for the first time in the Bundesliga just 30 seconds into the second half, after Max Meyer's effort had been cleared off the line by Stefan Bell.
The winner came with another first, as Julian Baumgartlinger netted his maiden Bundesliga goal on his 112th appearance with a header in the 79th minute to take Mainz level with Schalke, behind their guests only on goals scored.
