Cristiano Ronaldo under fire on Twitter for controversial advert
CONTROVERSIAL: Cristiano Ronaldo has been slated for appearing in Israeli TV ad

The Real Madrid player has become a hate figure on Twitter after he appeared in an advert for an Israeli broadband firm HOT.

The 31-year-old Portuguese star kicked off the storm when he himself tweeted to his 40 million followers: "There are rumors (sic) that I'm going to be a star in Israel. Not in soccer... In a HOT commercial.”

In the ad three well-known Israeli comedians, sporting over-the-top footballer haircuts, are shocked when the star turns up in the changing room of their club.

The ad has gone down well in Israel and has been liked on Twitter by 7,000 people but inevitably it attracted a tsunami of bile from opponents of Israel. The player was criticised in one tweet which read: "How do you advertise high speed internet for a country that deprives people of water, food, & shelter?"

Thousands responded to Ronaldo's tweet with comments which ended with the hashtag #freepalestine.

Among the comments was this cryptic one: "You spelled 'occupied Palestine' kinda weird there."

Hiramcito, on Twitter, wrote: "People are bashing Cristiano Ronaldo for his commercial in #Israel. Why must people always bring up politics into play?"

Israel's official Twitter account wrote: "That commercial will have your many fans in Israel thrilled!"

Earlier Daily Star Online reported how Ronaldo had popped up in a parody video by Football Daily in which he appeared to profess his love for Messi.
