MAURICIO POCHETTINO says Spurs' January failure to sign back-up for Harry Kane is a first sign of the "very tough period" the club will experience financially while they move into a new stadium.

Chairman Daniel Levy hopes to complete the £400million redevelopment of a new 61,000-seater White Hart Lane in time for the 2018-19 season.
But before that Spurs expect the same sort of budget constraints that hamstrung Arsenal while they completed the move from Highbury to the Emirates.
Fans had urged Pochettino to sign a striker in January with Kane the only senior out-and-out striker at the club.
But a second attempt to land Saido Berahino never materialised and Pochettino said: "We have in front of us a very tough period. Arsene Wenger says the most tough period of the club was in the period that they built the stadium. Now people need to know this is a very tough period for us.
"People are excited to see how we play but we need to be careful, because we need to arrive to the new stadium in very good condition to try to fight for everything and show that we are one of the best clubs in the world."
After the first window of the season, Levy credited the club's new policy of "pragmatic player trading" for "getting us to the position where we have now been able to start work on a new stadium."
