Bury had to settle for a 0-0 draw at home to Crewe despite dominating their League One clash.
The Shakers were hoping to claim their first back-to-back league wins since early October and climb back into the top half.
But top scorer Leon Clarke missed a host of chances for the hosts as rock-bottom Crewe clinched a valuable point.
Clarke could have scored just 94 seconds in as his curling effort was parried to safety by Ben Garratt.
Bury remained on top with Andrew Tutte firing over while Garratt somehow stopped Tom Soares' close-range effort.
Kelvin Etuhu then blazed over and Clarke managed to bundle Chris Hussey's low cross over the bar from three yards.
Crewe finally threatened moments before the break as Ryan Colclough fired inches wide from 20 yards.
Clarke almost broke the deadlock just after the interval as he fired against the inside of the far post from Tom Pope's cut-back.
Soares then blazed over while Clarke headed over from Hussey's cross when Jones was better placed.
Yet Crewe almost snatched all three points as Marcus Haber's 90th-minute shot was stopped on the Bury line by Reece Brown.
