Bayern Munich transfer bombshell: Club confirm interest in £40m striker

Considering the fact that Robert Lewondowski already has 15 goals and one assist from 14 Bundelisga starts this season, one would be forgiven for assuming that Bayern are content with possessing one of the finest goal-scorers in world football.

However, according to a statement made by Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at a Financial Fair Play event in Milan, the German powerhouse could be looking to make an addition to their striking roster as they "like" Napoli superstar Gonzalo Higuain.

"Clearly Higuain is a player we like, he is doing very well and I think he’ll be happy with that," said Rumenigge, as quoted by Football Italia.

"Despite that, I doubt my friend [Napoli chairman] Aurelio De Laurentiis will sell."

Higuain, 28, is a year older than Lewandowski, but is arguably just as reliable when it comes to scoring goals at club-level as the Argentine already has 18 goals returned from 19 starts in Serie A competition.

Should he score one more - and he has a full half season left to do so - then he will break his record haul in a single season while competing in the Italian division.

Higuain has long attracted interest in his services, particularly from the Premier League as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United were all linked with the player.

Only Arsenal allegedly made an official bid but Higuain was happy to reject their advances.

He is reportedly worth £40m ($82.5m AUS).
