Man City plotting surprise transfer swoop to sign Chelsea stalwart

Manchester City are understood to be monitoring Branislav Ivanovic‘s ongoing transfer impasse at Chelsea.

According to the Daily Star, the Sky Blues are monitoring the Serbian defender’s situation closely, and are considering a  move to bring the veteran stopper to the Etihad Stadium.

The report notes that the 31-year-old’s current deal comes to an end during the summer and, as yet, he’s yet to put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him in west London.

While the versatile defender—who can play on the right of the back four and in the heart of the defence—can already discuss his future with European clubs, the Citizens could swoop to sign him as a free agent at the end of the campaign.

Ivanovic joined Chelsea in 2008, and while he has shown some sign of a decline this season—notably when he was eviscerated by Swansea City’s Jefferson Montero at the beginning of the campaign—his toughness, attacking verve and experience could appeal to City.

However, the Citizens aren’t the only heavyweight side understood to be keen on the former Lokomotiv Moscow man, with the Daily Mail [via the Star] noting that Zenit St. Petersburg, and Serie A giants Inter Milan and AC Milan are also eyeing developments at Stamford Bridge.

Ultimately, all of his suitors may be left disappointed, with The Times reporting on Tuesday that the right-back was on the brink of agreeing new terms to extend his deal at Chelsea.
