Angers SCO 2 - 0 Caen: Angers back up to second in Ligue 1 after seeing off Caen

Angers reclaimed second place in Ligue 1 with a confident 2-0 victory against fellow European hopefuls Caen.

Goals from Pierrick Capelle and Billy Ketkeophomphone ensured the hosts avoided a third league game without a win.

Stephane Moulin's side went close as early as the eight minute when visiting goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre was saved by the woodwork after Romain Thomas headed Capelle's corner against the bar.

Undeterred, Caen offered a response as Andy Delort saw a shot flirt with the left post before Alaeddine Yahia's acrobatic effort failed to find the target.

Then, with half-time approaching, Angers broke the deadlock in superb fashion when Capelle showed great control on the edge of the area before dispatching a clinical finish for his first Ligue 1 goal.

Delort continued to keep the Angers defence on its toes, though, with his direct running and only alert keeping from Alexandre Letellier prevented the former Wigan man from levelling.

However, it was the hosts who grabbed the second goal of the game when Ketkeophomphone broke free of the Caen defence from substitute Mohamed Yattara's pass before beating Vercoutre on 74 minutes.

A Caen fightback failed to materialise and it was Angers who went closest to a third goal of the game late on when Kader Mangani tested Vercoutre with a stinging effort.
