San Mames fright as gusts damage stadium roof

Bilbao and its San Mames stadium were the scene of a scare just hours before the La Liga clash between Athletic Bilbao and Las Palmas after strong winds in the Basque city caused damage to the stadium.
Gale-force gusts, registered at over 100 km/hour, brought off part of the stadium's roof covering.
The section of roofing in question, which measured eight metres in length and half a metre in width, was blown off in the early afternoon, before being removed by firefighters. Fortunately the incident produced no injury victims.
A spokesperson from the emergency services underlined just how lucky an escape it had been: "Had it fallen out onto the street, we'd be here talking about a tragedy".
Once normality had been restored, supporters were able to gain access into San Mames and there was no delay to the kick-off.
