Jose Mourinho has left the door wide open for a move to Manchester United after reports in Spain suggest he has ruled out returning to Real Madrid.
The former Chelsea manager is a popular choice to replace Louis Van Gaal, should Old Trafford chiefs opt to give their manager the axe.
Certain sections of United supporters have called for him to be installed as manager - with some even wearing scarves with his face on.
A return to Madrid was seen as an option for the Portuguese coach earlier this week, but Spanish newspaper Diario Sport report that Mourinho does not want to return to the Bernabeu after leaving the club in 2013.
They claim his family are settled in London and add that he does not want to leave the country.
Despite coming under increasing pressure Van Gaal is determined to turn United’s season around.
They are without a win in eight games in all competitions and have slipped to sixth place in the Premier League.
Addressing his future following Monday’s goalless draw against Chelsea, Van Gaal said: “Even after this result the fans were applauding so I cannot say I am very concerned, but in this football world you never know. But I am am fully confident in the board and more importantly in my players.
''When the players can give such a performance with this pressure then there is no reason for me to resign. Maybe the media wants that but shall not do that. It is not a question of staying but of fulfilling my contract. There is no reason to sack me.”
