Momentous security measures in place for 'El Clásico'

There will be special measures in place at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday in the shape of the biggest security presence for a sporting event in Madrid's history. Only the security steps ahead of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona bear a reasonable level of resemblance to what is being done for the safety of the 80,000 supporters that will be in attendance at 'El Clásico'.

The Anti-Violence Committee decided that 1,000 national policemen and women will be deployed, as well as 1,400 assistants and officials from a private security company that Real Madrid (as the home team) have recruited.

The final figure is still to be confirmed, given that the government has not yet finalised numbers to be provided by Madrid City Council in terms of municipal police and other security bodies. The total number is expected to break the 3,000 mark.

Irrespective of the precise details, this is the biggest security operation for a sporting event in a city that has an illustrious history of being host to the world's very best sports stars.
