Shakhtar Donetsk kept their faint hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive after securing their first Champions League victory of the season in style with a 4-0 win at the Donbass Arena against Group A rivals Malmo.

Ukrainian side Shakhtar had lost all three of their previous group games without scoring heading into this encounter, including a 1-0 defeat in Malmo two weeks ago, but a first half goal from Olexandr Gladkiy and skipper Darijo Srna's penalty early in the second set them on their way.

Substitute Eduardo and Alex Teixeira added further goals and they were enough to see Shakhtar leapfrog Malmo off the bottom of the table on goal difference.

Visiting defender Kari Arnason was sent off for his second bookable offence in 89th minute.

Gladkiy gave Shakhtar a deserved lead in the 29th minute when he followed up his initial header, saved by Malmo goalkeeper Johan Wiland, to steer the ball home.

Shakhtar failed to add to their score before half-time, but three minutes after the restart Srna slammed home a penalty straight down the middle after Arnason had hauled down Teixeira in the box.

The home side were home and dry seven minutes later when they added a third.

Malmo only half cleared the danger following a free-kick into the area and Bernard's miscued volley from 20 yards was headed beyond Wiland by Eduardo.

Teixeira headed a rampant Shaktar's fourth on the rebound in the 73rd minute after Wiland had saved substitute midfielder Taison's shot following Srna's cut-back from the byline.

It was an impressive performance by Shakhtar and the only downside were the second half bookings of Srna and Oleksandr Kucher, which means both players will miss the visit of Real Madrid on November 25.

To make matters worse for the visitors Arnason was shown a second yellow card before the final whistle.
