Coventry 4 - 3 Barnsley: Joe Cole stars as Coventry hold on for thrilling win

Joe Cole rolled back the years to seal a 4-3 win for Coventry over struggling Barnsley.

Cole, on a short-term loan from Aston Villa, curled in a delightful free-kick on the hour to finally kill off the stubborn Reds and send them to their seventh successive league defeat.

Tony Mowbray's side looked home and hosed inside the first half thanks to outstanding goals from Ryan Kent and Adam Armstrong.

Kent scored an individual effort after only three minutes while Armstrong swept home a cross from Aaron Phillips 15 minutes later.

That should have been it, but the home side relaxed at the start of the second half and it cost them dearly when Alfie Mawson pulled one back three minutes after the restart.

Amstrong took just four minutes to restore the advantage but again Coventry took their foot off the pedal when Josh Scowen powered in a low angled shot.

Cole then stepped up majestically to curl in a free-kick from 22 yards after Armstrong had been brought down.

Still the drama was not over, though, and Scowen netted from the spot in injury-time after Phillips had handled.
