Gary McSheffrey marked his return to one of his former clubs with a superb strike as Scunthorpe beat Chesterfield 3-0 at the Proact Stadium.

Chesterfield had Dan Jones red-carded for tripping McSheffrey for the opening penalty scored by Paddy Madden, who added a third late on.

Scunthorpe created the first chance in the 22nd minute when Madden got behind Chesterfield on the right but McSheffrey headed his cross wide from six yards.

McSheffrey was denied by home goalkeeper Tommy Lee eight minutes later but Chesterfield went close in the 33rd minute when Jay O'Shea's 20-yard drive was deflected just wide.

Lee saved McSheffrey's free-kick and blocked the rebound from Madden in the 38th minute, but Scunthorpe broke through in the 56th minute when Madden converted from the penalty spot after Jones had been red-carded for tripping McSheffrey.

McSheffrey then beat Lee with a brilliant shot from 20 yards in the 63rd minute to double the lead, and although O'Shea thumped a free-kick against the bar, Madden sealed victory with a clinical finish from 15 yards in the 79th minute.
