Leo almost off the hook, jail threat for Messi Sr

The Public Prosecution Office in Barcelona has recommended that Lionel Messi's father be sentenced to 18 months in prison for cheating the taxman out of 4.1 million euros, while calling for the case against the star himself to be closed.

The written indictment submitted to the investigating judge in Gava, just up the coast from Barcelona, clears the 'Albiceleste' forward, against whom the initial charges were pressed, after his father claimed full responsibility.

Throughout the legal process, the public prosecutors involved have expressed doubts about the Barça wizard's incrimination in the tax offences in question. Indeed, after the 28-year-old testified in court, they asked for the case against him to be dropped as they concluded that he was completely unaware of the goings-on.

On the other hand, the Spanish State Legal Service, which represents the tax authorities' interests, has always maintained (and continues to argue) that the player may have given his blessing to the fraudulent schemes.

Given this stance - which was echoed by the Provincial High Court in Barcelona -, the Public Prosecution Office decided to take another look at the evidence and reconsider its position, but has now once again concluded that Leo should be acquitted.
