Does Rafa Benitez have a plan B

Real Madrid's game against Atletico Madrid only reinforced Rafa Benitez's reputation as a defensive coach, whose plan to revitalise the team has come into question following their poor performance at the Vicente Calderon.

Benitez arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu with a reputation for being a defensive coach and that reputation is alive and kicking following his team's performance in 'el Clasico'. The Spaniard is still on probation.

His players did very little to change that general perception of the Spanish coach. "He took me off because of the score line, to defend more", said Benzema on his second-half substitution.

It is obvious that one of Benitez's top priorities upon arriving at the Bernabeu was building a more solid defence, and Los Blancos' record appears to have proved him right, given that they have only conceded two goals so far this campaign.

However, there are those who point out that Navas is currently the team's star, saving several points with his world-class goalkeeping. Look no further than the game against Atletico.

Only time will tell whether there is a second part to Benitez's plan, one aimed at playing the game and creating more chances out on the pitch. So far, Real Madrid have notched up 15 goals in seven La Liga games, but six of those came in a single game, against Espanyol.
