PUNDIT: Rooney might want a career as a footie pundit
The Match Of The Day host interviewed him for a BBC documentary after he became England’s highest scorer.
Lineker said: “You can’t be that quality of footballer with spatial awareness and on-pitch intelligence and be stupid.
"Footballers might not be the most educated in the world but you can’t get to the very top without having a reasonable level of intelligence.”
England skipper Rooney, 29, is just “misunderstood”, he says.
Man Behind The Goals will be shown on the Beeb on October 5 and will also peek into the lives of Rooney’s wife Coleen, 29, and sons Kai, five and two-year-old Klay.
BALL TO MIC: Could Rooney become the next generations favourite football pundit?
QUALITY: Lineker claims you can't have that level of football intelligence and be stupid
Revelations include how Rooney wooed childhood sweetheart Coleen with love poems and lived a “boring, ordinary life outside of football”.
Lineker, 54, insists the film will transform public opinion of Rooney.
He said while Rooney could join him in the TV studio after retiring, he is yet to make any plans.
Gary added: “He’s quite interested in the media.”
