Manchester United vs Sunderland preview - Wilson staying put until December - Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will wait until December before deciding whether to send James Wilson out on loan.

Van Gaal said earlier this month that he planned to send the 19 year-old out on a temporary basis so the player could get some experience, but he remains on United's books.

The teenager was not in the squad for Wednesday's 3-0 win over Ipswich in the Capital One Cup, but there is no loan move pending for the striker, Van Gaal confirmed.

The United boss said he has "doubts" about whether it would be worthwhile loaning the player to a Championship club, and for that reason he will wait another two months before making a decision.

"I have talked with him and I think we wait until December," the United boss told a press conference on Friday.

"I think he needs to play but Manchester United's interests are always higher than individual interests, so I have doubts to let him go. And maybe we have to wait until December that we know how it is with our club, (if) we are succeeding in the Champions League, the Capital One Cup, because maybe he shall receive minutes off me because I have to rotate."

Van Gaal let Radamel Falcao, Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie go this summer.

The impact of those departures has been offset by the signing of Anthony Martial, who has scored four goals in four games since his B£36million move from Monaco.

Van Gaal came in for criticism after spending so much on Martial, but at the moment it looks a wise investment.

If he scores against Sunderland on Saturday, he will become the only United player to score in his first three Premier League matches.

Van Gaal believes little fazes his new star, but he concedes he is still settling into life at Old Trafford.

"He is still living in a hotel so he is in the first phase of his adaptation, also for his wife and his kid," Van Gaal said.

"That is also important because that shall have an influence also.

"Now he is only living in a hotel, coming to the training session and eating with the players, train and prepare for matches.

"The big step is when he settles himself and his wife in a new environment."

Black Cats manager Dick Advocaat has described his old adversary as "one of the best coaches in the world" on the eve of the match.

The Sunderland head coach, who celebrated his 68th birthday on Sunday, played with 64-year-old Van Gaal at Sparta Rotterdam but has locked horns with him throughout his lengthy managerial career.

More often than not he has enjoyed bragging rights, having lost just once in 10 meetings.

Yet Advocaat said: "He's one of the best coaches in the world, no doubt about that. He has worked at the highest levels in Europe.

"He is a manager who does not just look for the easy way, he is always looking for the most difficult way. If you see his prize list, it is unbelievable, so I rate him very highly."

Sunderland will head for Old Trafford sitting at the foot of the table and without a win in their opening six league games to meet a United side sitting in second place.

Defender Younes Kaboul returns to the Sunderland squad after suspension, however there are doubts over midfielder Jack Rodwell (ankle) and striker Jermain Defoe (hamstring).

Adam Matthews remains on the sidelines with an ankle problem.
