Since then Van Gaal has used midfielder Daley Blind at centre-back.
Marseille and Valencia also enquired about Rojo but the defender wants to prove himself to LVG and will hold talks with the United boss after the international break.
Monaco also discussed striker Javier Hernandez in the £58m deal for Martial but he had already agreed to join Bayer Leverkusen.
The principality club wanted Hernandez PLUS £58m for Martial.
