Welbeck ruled out for 'months'

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has seen his strike force weakened with the news that Danny Welbeck will be sidelined for "months" after undergoing knee surgery.

The 24-year-old striker had been working his way back from the knee injury he sustained towards the end of last season and recently returned to training with the first team.

However, after the problem flared up again, the Gunners' medical staff took the decision to send Welbeck for an operation, which will keep the England international out of action for some time to come.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work.

"Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well."

Welbeck spent 10 weeks on the sidelines last term as his debut season at the Emirates Stadium was hampered by injuries following his move from Manchester United in September 2014.
