WC Wrap: Iraq, Uzbekistan, Iran and Oman win

Iraq beat Chinese Taipei in their 2018 World Cup qualifier played at Shahid Dastgerdi Stadium in Tehran on Thursday.

Here is a brief wrap of some of today’s Asian World Cup qualifiers.

Group F: Iraq 5-1 Chinese Taipei (Shahid Dastgerdi Stadium)

Iraq were comfortable winners against Chinese Taipei with a domineering display in the second half that saw them score four times.

The result puts Iraq second in Group F on three points after one game while Taipei have no points from two games and are bottom of the table.

The home side opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Ali Adnan and went into the break leading 1-0.

Then goals by Ali Husni and Ahmed Yasin in the 59th and 80th minutes increased the lead. Taipei pulled a goal back in the 86th minute through Wen Chih-hao to restore some respectability.

But that all changed two minutes later when Younis Mahmoud scored again for Iraq, with Justin Meram adding his side's fifth goal after being awarded a penalty in the 91st minute.

Group H: Uzbekistan 1-0 Yemen (Tashkent)

Uzbekistan got their first points with a 1-0 win over Yemen to climb to third on the Group H table with three points after two games while Yeman remain routed at the bottom with no points.

The goal was scored in the second half thanks to forward Aleksandr Geynrikh in the 51st minute.

Group D: Iran 6-0 Guam (Azadi Stadium)

Iran dominated ball possession from the start and scored four goals during the first-half to kill the game off.

The goals were scored by a brace from forward Sardar Azmoun in the 34th and 41st minutes and another brace by Mehdi Taremi on the 31st and 65th minutes, while Ashkan Dejagah got the opener in the 10th minute and Mehdi Torabi scored the sixth goal in the 89th minute.

The result moves Iran up to second place for now on four points from two games behind Guam who are top of Group D on six points. This could change though as other teams in the group must still play today.

Group D: Oman v Turkmenistan (Muscat)

Oman played well and thoroughly deserved the win against Turkmenistan after looking very good during the first-half thanks to two early goal, allowing them to go in at the break leading 2-0.

The home side opened the scoring in the seventh minute thanks to a goal by Raed Ibrahim Saleh then three minutes later Turkmenistan defender Makan Saparow scored an own goal. Emad Al Hosani got the third goal for Oman in the 59th minute before Arslanmyrat Amanow pulled a goal back for the visitors to make the final score 3-1.

The win moves Oman top of Group D on goal difference after two games above Guam while Turkmenistan are fourth on one point from three games.
