REAL MADRID turned down a deal for left-back Alberto Moreno after Liverpool offered them the chance to sign him, according to reports in Spain.

On the day of the Spanish transfer deadline day, it was reported that Real boss Rafa Benitiez was keen to tie up a late deal.

Moreno was understood to be a direct replacement for Fabio Coentrao, who recently joined Monaco on loan.

However, Spanish publication AS claim Benitez opted out of a deal.

The Spain defender has had a difficult time at Anfield since singing from Sevilla for £12million last summer.

The 23-year-old came in for criticism from Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson, who described him as "a little boy."

He has made only substitute appearances this season and has fallen behind youngster Joe Gomez in the pecking order.

While he was a regular in Brendan Rodgers' first-team last season, Moreno was part of a leaky defence that was widely criticised.

The Spaniard has also been linked with Barcelona and Roma but either of those moves also failed to materialise.
