MANCHESTER UNITED did not sign a new centre-back this summer because Louis van Gaal made Sergio Ramos his one and only target.
United bosses had planned to use goalkeeper David De Gea as bait to lure World Cup winner Ramos to Old Trafford.
But Real Madrid refused to sell their star defender.
United were expected to strengthened their back four in the summer and were linked with several other top names.
But it is understood Van Gaal is confident with what he's got and deciding against pursuing other targets after a deal for Ramos fell through.
NO DEAL: United only wanted Ramos
The club source told Starsport: "The club looked at who from Real Madrid we wanted and might be able to get.
"Louis' view was that there was no other central defender he wanted other than Ramos.
"There was no second choice, so we didn't go for another one.
