Alex Song has returned to West Ham on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona.

West Ham were keen to secure the services of the Cameroon international for another season following a successful loan spell at the club last term.

The 27-year-old has spent most of the summer nursing an ankle injury, throwing into doubt whether he would be able to leave parent club Barcelona during the current transfer window.

But the player has now passed a medical and will spend the rest of the season at Upton Park.

"I am very happy," he told the club's official website. "When I left I didn't know I would come back here.

"It was not easy but at the end of the day, the most important thing is I'm here now and I'm very happy. I feel at home, everything feels at home, for my family too, they're set up very well here. My kids are playing for West Ham academy.

"Everything was in a good place for me to come back here and I'm very happy to be here. It's a pleasure and it's like I never left here. I'm still here and I'm happy."

He joined Arsenal as a youngster from Ligue 1 side Bastia in 2005 and went on to make 204 appearances for the club before moving to Barcelona in 2012.

The 49-cap Cameroon midfielder struggled to cement a first team place with the Catalan giants, starting 29 La Liga matches in two seasons, before sealing a loan switch to West Ham last year.
