Everton confirm striker signing as Chelsea target’s transfer request is rejected

Everton have completed the signing of Leandro Rodriguez, as the club also look to keep hold of one of their prized assets, John Stones.

The club revealed the addition of Rodriguez on their official website, with the 22-year-old signing from River Plate Montevideo for an undisclosed fee.

The attacker moved to Goodison Park on a four-year deal, having scored 19 goals in 71 games for his previous club.

Coach Roberto Martinez has expressed his delight with the forward’s arrival, describing him as an effective poacher who can also contribute in the build-up play.

"Leandro Rodriguez is a young striker with a real knack of scoring goals," the Spanish coach began.

"But he’s much more than that, too. His contribution is a lot more than that and hopefully we can provide a path where he can develop and enjoy his football. If he can do that, clearly that’s going to bring goals to the first team."

However, while Martinez will be delighted to have secured a new offensive addition to his squad, the manager’s top priority between now and the end of the transfer window will be retaining the services of John Stones.

The England defender handed in a transfer request on Tuesday, with a view to pushing through a move to reigning Premier League champions Chelsea.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Stones’s request has been rejected.

With only a matter of days to go until the window closes, it remains to be seen whether Stones will again agitate to secure a move away from the club, or whether he will accept Bill Kenwright’s decision.

Similarly, Chelsea may yet return with a lucrative offer that would compel Everton to cash in on the international stopper.
