Arsene Wenger has denied that Arsenal are in talks with Karim Benzema over a move to the Emirates, as per Times journalist Oliver Kay on Twitter.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Benzema throughout most of the summer, with the Express reporting that the Gunners had put aside £46 million to sign the striker. The Express also say that Arsenal are desperate for him to move to the Emirates.
However Wenger, speaking after Arsenal’s 1-o victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield, has moved to deny rumours that the French international is set to move from Madrid to North London.
Oliver Kay, who was at Wenger’s post-match press conference, tweeted that the Arsenal manager gave a definitive “no” when asked if there was any truth in the reports regarding a move for Benzema.
The 27-year-old forward was in excellent form for Real Madrid last season, scoring 15 league goals in just 29 outings for the club.
However, Benzema’s future at the La Liga club has been uncertain following the appointment of Rafa Benitez as manager, amid speculation by the Daily Mail that the Spanish coach will use Cristiano Ronaldo as his main striker.
Arsenal currently have Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott as their main strikers for the new season but the Gunners are looking to add another forward to aid their push for the Premier League trophy.
