The Brazilian was highly rated under the regime of Sir Alex Ferguson and was tipped to follow in the footsteps of Gary Neville and become the club's new long-term right-back at Old Tafford.
However, a succesion of injury problems and lack of defensive discipline have led the 25-year old's career to stall in recent seasons.
With Rafael having only one year left on his current deal and being rated as the 4th choice right-back behind Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and potentially Phil Jones, he wouldn't demand a high transfer fee.
His agent, Cassiano Pereira, admitted Olympique Lyonnais and two clubs in Turkey were in negotiations with his client.
Lyon have expressed a strong interest in bringing the attacking full-back to Stade de Gerland in a bid to strengthen their squad as they look to challenge PSG for the Ligue 1 title this season and, according to L'Equipe, the deal could be finalised before the start of the new campaign.
