Danny Murphy was offered a job at Liverpool

The Reds boss appointed McAllister as first team coach after the departures of Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh, but not before Murphy was contacted over the vacancy.

Murphy played for Liverpool between 1997 and 2004, clocking up 249 appearances for the club and scoring 44 goals.

And the 33-year-old, who moved into the media after his football career, admits he's waiting for the right job before making the move back into coaching.

"A few weeks ago I did have a chat with Brendan about the possibility of maybe working with him and the club again but it didn't quite materialise," Murphy said in an exclusive audioBoom podcast published on Express.co.uk.

It was actually an honour to be thought of by him, being in his company for a few hours was great, he was very impressive and as we know Gary McAllister got that job, who is a friend of mine and is a very bright and experienced coach.

"He's a good guy and I wish him all the best, and the club all the best but it was nice to be thought of.

"For me in terms of that, I enjoy the media stuff with the BBC and on the radio, and ideally I would like to get back involved (in the game) but I'm not closing any doors because you never know.

"It's that family balance but if the right job comes along you have to seriously consider it."

But Murphy insists Liverpool will be better off next term after their summer transfer overhaul despite still having questions over certain areas.

He added: "The thing for Liverpool now, is what system are they going to play?

"I think they'll play Benteke up on his own, wait for Sturridge to get fit and then maybe tweak it, play the two Brazilian lads Coutinho and Firmino in off the wings and really get the creativity from there.

"They've got Milner, Henderson and Emre Can as a midfield three. It looks a lot more solid than it did last season, some real legs, energy.

"Henderson and Milner both know the Premier League well, so the question for me is: do they need to replace the keeper?

"It doesn't look like they're going to. I know some fans, including me, think he's not quite top drawer and are the centre-halves good enough? Last season they weren't.

"Lovren's got to step up to the plate because last season he had a poor one.

"But I do think Liverpool will be better this season. I think Benteke's a really good player."
