Manchester United in dispute with Paris St-Germain over Angel Di Maria fee

MANCHESTER UNITED have opened official talks with Paris St-Germain about selling £60m flop Angel Di Maria to the French champions.

Starsport can reveal PSG assistant sporting director Olivier Letang flew to London last weekend to start negotiations with United chief executive Ed Woodward.

Woodward has returned from United’s pre-season tour of America and met Letang at a secret location in Mayfair on Monday.

But it is understood the European rivals are at loggerheads over a fee for Di Maria, who has told United he wants to leave Old Trafford.

PSG are willing to spend £40m on the Argentine winger, but United want to recoup as much as possible of the British-record fee they paid for Di Maria when he joined them from Real Madrid last summer.

More talks will take place this week in the hope of striking a deal, with United demanding no less than £50m.

United have spent £80m on the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay and Di Maria knows competition for places will be stronger than ever next season.

He has been promised regular starts by PSG who are willing to meet his wage demands of £200,000-a-week.

Di Maria, who failed to hold down a regular place in Van Gaal’s first team last season, struggled to adapt to life in Manchester and would like a fresh start in the French capital.

Van Gaal is reluctant to sell Di Maria but will agree to let him go if the winger wants to leave and has been told he can use all the funds to sign a new striker.

Despite being willing to let the window close without signing a new hitman, Van Gaal remains desperate to lure German ace Thomas Muller to United.

United have had a £50m bid rejected by Bayern Munich but are considering an improved offer in the region of £60m in the hope of landing the World Cup winner.

Muller is said to be interested in joining United. But if Bayern refuse to sell then Van Gaal is expected to turn to Barcelona’s unwanted star Pedro, who has a £22m release clause in his Nou Camp contract.

Meanwhile Van Gaal is refusing to give up hope of signing long-term target Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid.

United have had two bids rejected, with Real president Florentino Perez wanting David De Gea to travel in the opposite direction.

But Van Gaal said: “I have said in a lot of press conferences that it’s a process. Maybe Mr. Ramos is in the process... you never know.”

“You have to wait and see. The transfer period is open September 1, so we have to wait.”
