Starsport revealed yesterday the Di Maria was edging closer to a £50m move to Paris St-Germain having decided to quit Old Trafford after just one season.

But Van Gaal is understood to have called the Argentina international last week to try and convince him to stay for another season and prove he can cut it in the Premier League.

PSG are desperate to take advantage of Di Maria's situation, the former Real Madrid star understood to have told United he and his wife are unhappy in England.

Van Gaal is ready to do business with the money-bags French side if Di Maria cannot be persuaded to tough it out

But the Dutchman does not want to sell Di Maria less than a year after paying a British record transfer fee of £59.7m to bring him to Old Trafford from Spain.

Di Maria's departure could open the door for a player exchange with PSG's striker Edinson Cavani, although the French outfit have consistently stated the Uruguay international will not be leaving the Parc de Prince this summer.

Van Gaal desperately needs to strengthen his attack after allowing of Robin van Persie to move to Fenerbache and failing to extend Falcao's loan move - the Colombian have been picked up by Chelsea.

Wayne Rooney is certainly in need of help up front, but the United skipper is delighted with the moves Van Gaal has made to strengthen United's midfield with the captures of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Rooney said: "Bastian is a very experienced player who has won everything in the game and it's great that he has chosen to join us and left a team like Bayern Munich to come here.

"And Morgan as well - it's great to see Bastian, him, Matteo (Darmian) and Memphis (Depay) all come in and give the squad a boost.

"It's exciting times and I'm sure over the next week or two it'll be great for us to get some training sessions in and get to know each other's games."
