Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to his old team-mate Gary McAllister on Instagram and wished him luck ahead of his new role as the club’s first-team coach.
With Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh both fired, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has had to bring in replacements and McAllister joins as first team coach with Sean O’Driscoll earlier confirmed as the new number two.
Gerrard played with McAllister when he was breaking into the team and he wasted no time in posting a message of support on his Instagram.
The news has been greeted positively by Liverpool fans with many believing that both Pascoe and Marsh were a little soft and both McAllister and O’Driscoll have tougher reputations.
Last season was a tough one for Rodgers despite the team playing good football at times.
It was dominated by the Raheem Sterling transfer saga, which is yet to be resolved, and it all came to head in a final day 6-1 mauling away at Stoke City.
Although Rodgers was kept on by the club’s owners he will be under immense pressure going into the coming season.
Should the club start slowly then it is very possible that he could be axed.
