ANGEL Di MARIA could miss the start of the Premier League campaign after picking up a hamstring injury in the Copa America final.

The Manchester United forward was forced out of Argentina's defeat to Chile after just 29 minutes.

And he now faces an anxious wait to discover the full extent of the problem.

Di Maria had impressed during the tournament, raising hopes the United record signing is now ready to put a frustrating first season at Old Trafford behind him.

The former Real Madrid man was already going to miss the club's pre-season tour to the United States after being given a four-week break by manager Louis Van Gaal.

But his current injury scare means the wideman could also be missing for the opening day clash with Tottenham on August 8.

With Di Maria sidelined, Argentina were beaten on penalties after a scoreless 120 minutes - with Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez striking the winning spot.kick.

That ended Chile's 99-year wait to land a major trophy while Argentina suffered a repeat of last year's World Cup final defeat to Germany.

Di Maria said: "Again it was decided in a matter of seconds, and again we could not achieve our objective.

"We did everything to win, we had many chances. Near the end, Pipita (Gonzalo Higuain) nearly got a goal, while Marquitos (Marcos Rojo) should have had a penalty awarded to him.

"Chile's tactics in the match were perfect."
