LEICESTER have made Neil Lennon their top target to replace Nigel Pearson.

WANTED MAN: Lennon

And the current Bolton boss is understood to be keen to return to the club where he made his name as a player in the late 1990s.

No approach has yet been made for the ex-Celtic manager.

But sources close to the Macron Stadium are worried that Lennon may have taken charge of his last game for Wanderers.

Lennon, who only took charge of the Championship side last October, is believed to have a gentlemen's agreement with Phil Gartside should a Premier League club come calling.

That will allow him to leave for only around £500,000 compensation with two years left on his Bolton contract.

AXED: Pearson

Leicester are in no rush to replace Pearson who was unceremoniously axed on Tuesday night.

The fallout over his son James' sacking for his part in a racist sex orgy while on an ambassadorial trip to Thailand led to a breakdown in Pearson's relationship with the owners.

He has now believed to have agreed a fee of around £1m in compensation after his three-and-a-half year reign was ended in a telephone call from Thai billionaires, the Srivaddhanaprabha family.

The Foxes are taking their time to compile their shortlist but Lennon is top of it thanks to his legendary status in the East Midlands.

The 44-year-old made over 200 appearances for Leicester from 1996-2000 and his all-action style made his a firm fans' favourite.

He helped the club claim two League Cups and emerge as a force in the Premier League under Martin O'Neill.

Current Republic of Ireland manager O'Neill and Burnley boss Sean Dyche are alternative candidates to succeed Pearson.

But ex-West Ham chief Sam Allardyce is not thought to be an option due to his close friendship and the fact that he wants some time out of the game after leaving West Ham.

Pearson's coaches Craig Shakespeare and Steve Walsh - who is heavily involved in the recruitment side - are staying on as caretakers.

But Pearson holds them in such high regard he is almost certain to want to take them with him to any new club.
