Five star signings to join Sergio Ramos at Manchester United as Louis van Gaal puts transfer plans into action

Manchester United finally made concrete their reported interest in Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos on Thursday, in making a bid for the 29-year-old.

While Louis van Gaal’s opening £35 million offer for Ramos was rebuffed by the Merengues, the Dutch coach looks set to return to the Bernabeu with an improved offer.

With the defender understood to be unhappy at the club, and angling for a move away from the Spanish capital, it looks likely that he will make the move to Old Trafford over the coming months.

He is unlikely to be United’s last recruit this summer, as the club look to strengthen ahead of a title challenge and a return to the Champions League.

In this feature, we present five star signings who may well be set to join Ramos in Manchester this summer.

Carlos Bacca

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has admitted that he cannot confirm that Carlos Bacca will be at the club next season. The Colombian striker found the net 28 times in all competitions last term, and his fine form has prompted interest from several Premier League giants.

The Red Devils will be looking for new offensive options to lead the line following the failings of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, as well as the ongoing certainty surrounding Javier Hernandez’s future, and could do a lot worse than 28-year-old Bacca.

However, should they move for the South American, they may face competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and AS Roma.

Karim Benzema

United have been heavily linked with French international Karim Benzema this summer, with the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward having been photographed with the player’s agent in a London hotel.

It remains to be seen what new Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez will have planned for the former Olympique Lyonnais man, but should he be put up for sale, he might be a perfect option for the Red Devils.

Gonzalo Higuain

Another striking option for United—and a former teammate of Sergio Ramos—is Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Like Benzema, the Argentine hitman is an elite performer and has scored double figures in the last seven league seasons in both Spain—with Real—and latterly, in Italy, with Napoli.

United have been linked to the forward—with the Express understanding that a fee of £67 million would be required to snare the attacker—but the Red Devils may face competition from Arsenal.

Jasper Cillessen

Should David De Gea leave for Real Madrid—as has been rumoured for several months—United will almost certainly be looking for a new keeper to replace him.

Victor Valdes—the club’s current number two—could step up should his compatriot leave, but the Red Devils have also been linked to several new stoppers who they could look to bring in this summer.

Asmir Begovic, Hugo Lloris and Petr Cech have all been rumoured to have caught the eye of van Gaal, although with the last of these three already agreeing a move to Arsenal, the coach may have to look elsewhere.

According to the Sunday Times, United have been given clearance to move for van Gaal’s compatriot Jasper Cillessen, and appear to be considering the Ajax No. 1 for a reported fee of €25 million.

Harry Kane

Having been eliminated from the U21 European Championships with England, United might opt to intensify their transfer plans for Harry Kane.

The Express understand that the three-time European champions are considering a £40 million offer for the Tottenham Hotspur man, although Mauricio Pochettino reportedly has plans to offer the striker the Spurs vice-captaincy in order to dissuade him from looking elsewhere.

21-year-old Kane managed 21 goals in 34 Premier League starts for the Lillywhites last season, and would represent a marquee addition to United’s roster.
