Tottenham star Harry Kane pinpoints Chelsea thrashing as his defining moment of the season

HARRY KANE will never forget the day he realised he felt at home playing among the best.

He is here in the Czech Republic determined that England can make up for their opening 1-0 defeat by Portugal in these European Under-21 Championships when they face Sweden tomorrow.

And if can score, or make an impact, it will be the next chapter in the story which really took off on New Year’s Day this year when Spurs thrashed Chelsea 5-3, a match he still watches in his spare moments.

Before the Chelsea game, Kane had been the player Spurs were nurturing for the future.

Suddenly, as he scored two goals, made another and ran John Terry and Gary Cahill ragged in a thrilling victory, he became the present.

''I think Chelsea were the first top four side I’d played against,” said Kane. ''

''So to get two goals and an assist and win the way we did showed me I could do it against any team, not just Europa League opponents, not just teams in the bottom half of the Premier League, but against anybody.

''I have watched it back. Sometimes, if I’m at home, and there’s nothing on, I’ll have a little look, not just at that game, all my games. I like to do that and see what I can improve on.

''That was a great time for me and a great game, but that was hopefully just the beginning. You have to keep doing it season after season, and that’s what I’ll be looking to do next season.”

As Kane said yesterday that he is completely “happy” at White Hart Lane and, while “flattered” that he is being linked with a massive bid from Manchester United, he considers Spurs a sufficiently “big club” to fulfil his ambitions.

So what motivates him, when he could take his pick of clubs after a sensational breakthrough season in which he scored 31 goals for Spurs, another 79 seconds into his senior England debut and is now leading the line for England Under-21s in Euro 2015?

''To win trophies, and to be one of the best players in the world,” he said. “As any footballer growing up, you want to be the best you can. The top players around the world are doing it week in week out, scoring goals and putting in great performances, and that’s what I aim to achieve.

''I want to win trophies, not just for club, for country. That’s always been the aim and always will be.”

Many players whose stock have risen not as high as Kane’s have found themselves withdrawn from contention for European Under-21 Championships.

But, even when Spurs announced they were going on a post-season tour Down Under, he was dead set on joining up with team-mates who have become pals over the past two years.

''I made it clear I always wanted to be here,” he said, preparing for tomorrow’s pivotal group game. “It’s a great experience for me, I had a great campaign with the lads, so it’s a chance for me to come away and play with my mates in a big tournament.

''We’re still upbeat and we’re still excited for the games ahead and we know what we can achieve.”

Tomorrow will be his 60th competitive game of a remarkable season but he still feels fresh – “I’m probably as fit as I ever have been,” he said. “I’m happy.”
