Rafa Benitez would keep hold of key Premier League targets at Real Madrid

Rafa Benitez, who is expected to be named as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Real Madrid in the coming days, has reportedly told the club that he doesn’t wish to sell Gareth Bale, Fabio Coentrao or Asier Illarramendi this summer, according to the Daily Express.

Benitez confirmed today that he will leave current club Napoli following a two season stint in Serie A.

Should he take to the helm at the Bernabeu, the 55-year-old is reportedly keen on making world-record signing Bale a key figure in his plans. The news will come as major blow to Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United who have both shown an interest in the unsettled Welshman, as per the same report.

The 25-year-old has endured a difficult second season in Spain after what had been a promising start to life with Los Blancos. He scored 13 goals and registered nine assists this term but failed to come to the fore in the vital games.

Last year he scored the goal that put the Galacticos ahead in the Champions League final which sent them on their way to claiming La Decema.

Meanwhile, the Express also suggests that Benitez is keen on giving Arsenal, Liverpool and United targets Coentrao and Illarramendi a chance to prove their worth.

Both players have been bit-part players for Madrid this campaign making just 15 starts between them all term, as a result, it has been thought that they would be made surplus to requirements.
