Manchester United in talks over cut-price deal for Bastian Schweinsteiger

MANCHESTER UNITED have confirmed they want to sign German superstar Bastian Schweinsteiger in a sensational £10m cut-price deal.

United boss Louis van Gaal has targeted the World Cup winner and is confident of luring him to Old Trafford this summer.

A senior figure at United told Starsport: “Yes, Bastian Schweinsteiger is someone we are interested in signing.”

It is understood United chiefs have held talks with the Bayern Munich midfielder, who was in Manchester recently and is open to the move to Old Trafford.

Landing Schweinsteiger from one of their main European rivals would be a huge coup for United as Van Gaal looks to turn his side into champions again.

Van Gaal worked with him during his time as Bayern boss and believes their close friendship can help seal a deal.

The Dutchman is desperate to bolster his midfield with at least two world class signings and knows Schweinsteiger’s experience and quality fits the bill.

Van Gaal has spoken to Ed Woodward and the United chief executive is keen to do a deal.

He has made more than 500 appearances for Bayern and helped the German giants win eight Bundesliga titles as well as the Champions League in 2013.

Schweinsteiger, 30, who has won 109 international caps, is entering the final 12 months of his current deal with Pep Guardiola’s men.

He has not agreed a new contract and could be available for even less than £10m, although Bayern bosses would be reluctant to sell him to United.

But Schweinsteiger has become disillusioned with life at Bayern since Guardiola took charge and is keen on a fresh challenge.

He has had a long-standing ambition to play in the Premier League and is a big admirer of United’s standing world football.

Guardiola has endured a difficult campaign, despite leading Bayern to another domestic title.

He saw highly-respected medical officer Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt quit the club in April following a fall-out with the Spanish coach, while he has also had bust-ups with several members of his first team squad.

Meanwhile, United remain confident of still being able to land Schweinsteiger’s World Cup winning team-mate Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc claims the defender has decided to stay with Dortmund, but United chiefs reckon he still wants to join them and will pursue a possible £30m deal.
