Romelu Lukaku headed the winner in the third minute of stoppage time to give Everton the three points after Leon Osman had equalised Stewart Downing's opener for the Hammers.

The Blues boss was thrilled with the display of his team across the 90 minutes though and the chances they created.

"If you look at the overall performance over 90 minutes I felt we had the better chances and even before West Ham got ahead I thought we had opportunities," said Martinez.

"We were unfortunate not to take any of those. When you come here you know you're going to be tested, I think you need to defend really well and cope with their approach. They're a team that plays with a lot of confidence at home, especially

"So to do all the aspects well in the performance today was pleasing, to go one goal down and finding a way to win the game brings you more satisfaction."

The former Wigan manager also backed young full-back Brendan Galloway to have a "˜phenomenal future' after he impressed on debut.

"As a young man you need the club to give you an opportunity and then in the same way as a young man you need to take it," he added.

"We've seen with Brendan Galloway that we've got a player with a phenomenal future: his demeanour, his personality " you can analyse the performance today in many aspects but the way that he coped with it, the situation, it was quite impressive.

"We're really excited about his performance and even more about what's ahead of him."
