MANCHESTER UNITED will step up their bid to sign Gareth Bale following his Champions League nightmare with Real Madrid.

Manchester United are keen to sign Gareth Bale in the summer

But they face competition from neighbours Manchester City and Chelsea if Real, as now seems likely, decide to sell the unsettled Welsh international this summer.

United, who wanted Bale when he left for Spain two years ago in a word record £85million transfer from Tottenham, have been working on trying to bring him back to the Premier League for months, encouraged by noises from his camp that he is open to a move to United, where his boyhood hero Ryan Giggs is assistant manager.

Bale once again came under fire from fans and media in Spain after squandering a number of chances as Real saw their hopes of a Champions League final against Barcelona scuppered by Juventus.

That exit has also increased the chances of boss Carlo Ancelotti – Bale's biggest supporter at the Bernabeu – being sacked with the Spanish giants now destined to finish the season trophy-less. Bale's fate now lies in the hands of Real president Florentine Perez.

United can make way for Bale by shipping out Angel Di Maria to Paris St Germain – possibly on loan for a season – while they could reluctantly offer Spain No 1 David Ge Gea in part exchange, if the goalkeeper refuses to sign a new contract.

Ed Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman, made it clear yesterday that ahead of their return to the Champions League, the summer spending will not stop with the £25m arrival of Memphis Depay.

Announcing the club's third quarter financial results, he said: "The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts, all competitions, next year. That, as ever, does involve some ins and outs in the summer.

"We expect to be active again during the window and we have already started implementing our plans, and last week announced that Memphis Depay, who is one of the most exciting young players in Europe, will be joining our first-team."

The impact of not playing in the Champions League and having only two home ties in the two domestic cup competitions, saw United's revenues fall by £20m in the third quarter of its financial year, when compared to 2014.

They brought in £95m in the three months to March 31, compared to £115.5m last year - a 17.7 per cent drop.
