Manchester United van Persie: Outcast gets chance to fight for future against West Brom

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will reportedly be given a rare and potentially final chance to fight for his future at the club in this weekend’s game against West Bromwich Albion.

The Daily Star claims the out-of-favour Dutchman is in line to start against the Baggies on Saturday after coming through an under-21s fixture unscathed. He is likely to replace captain Wayne Rooney, who is currently struggling with a knee injury.

With only four matches left this term it could be the 31-year-old’s last opportunity to prove that he is worthy of a place in the Red Devils squad. Their rejuvenation coincided with his injury lay-off, which lasted from February 21 at Swansea City to last Sunday’s 3-0 loss at Everton, where he was a late substitute.

He has little more than 12 months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and the club could be tempted to cash in should an offer be forthcoming, allowing the three-time European Cup winners to shift him off the wage bill.

The ex-Arsenal captain is competing with Radamel Falcao for a starting spot against West Brom, unless head coach Louis van Gaal opts to deploy both men up front.
