VfB Stuttgart vs SC Freiburg preview - Points worth more than pride

Stuttgart face Freiburg in a local derby this weekend knowing that points mean a lot more than pride this time around.

Three points currently separate the two sides at the bottom of the table with Stuttgart currently below the relegation line and Freiburg above it.

Now more than ever before are the points crucial in a Baden-Wurttemberg battle which the home team's coach Huub Stevens is desperate to win, even if they do not look pretty in doing so.

"That doesn't get you any points," he said, referring to the compliments his side have received lately when he would rather have had victories.

"You can talk about any game being a final or something like that, but for me, every game is important."

Saturday's game certainly ranks up there, though, and Stuttgart's director of sport Robin Dutt, who used to coach Freiburg, has spoken about the "pressure being very high" for his side.

It is a little less for Freiburg, though, since of the two sides from Germany's south west, they are the ones most people would expect to be relegated of the two.

"Nobody expects Stuttgart to go down," said their coach Christian Streich, who hopes this could play into his side's hands at the Mercedes-Benz Arena this weekend with the expectations high for the home team.

"Looking at the potential they have got, they just haven't turned that into points so far."

Streich's men from the Black Forest could put six points between themselves and their local rivals with four games of the season to go with a win, but they will have to do so without the suspended Pavel Krmas and the injured Mats Moller Daehli.

Daniel Didavi is in the frame for a return to Stuttgart, although Stevens says that "while he is fit, that does not mean he is match fit."
