Let’s start but making things crystal clear: to the best of our knowledge, rumours spreading around like wildfire that Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been caught having an affair with Pablo Zabaleta’s wife are complete and utter lies.

So how did this rumour sweep the internet on Sunday night and Monday morning?

As is usually the case in such situations, the nasty rumour aimed at destroying Vincent Kompany’s character appears to have been started on social media by trolls.

A simple Google search for the words “Zabaleta Kompany” brings up a page on Reddit which has now been discredited.
